Yogurt and The Baby Jesus

A Christmas Story.........

Her eyes lit up when she spied something new in grandmee’s front window….little dolls and animals, a barn and elaborate fence that stretched the width of the window’s bay…
It was my grandma Gerner’s nativity set that I bought at their garage sale.  She probably bought it at a “5 and dime” in the 40’s or 50’s…all the characters marked with the word, “Italia”….all of sentimental rather than cash value to me.
Yet, I had no problem with my beautiful 2-year old granddaughter handling it….she lovingly picked up each character and spent a lot of time that morning babbling away as she played with her new attraction.  I introduced her to the cast, however, she knew “baby” without any help from me. (she was expecting a new baby brother very soon)  Baby Jesus had to follow her as she finished her car made of blocks, up to the bedroom for a diaper change and even went for a ride with her on “the wonder horse”, ( a spring horse used by her dad and aunt T).

At lunch she climbed in her highchair, as I tied her bib….lunch that day was the usual yogurt, along with bits of sausage, grapes and orange sections.  I had moved my bills to the island to work on them, while Bryn ate with a “Dora” episode playing in the backround….there’s many ways to eat yogurt when you’re two….a spoon, your fingers, as a dip for your grapes and oranges…I dipped my graham cracker (that was pretty good, too)…..geez, I really need glasses…..Bryn was following my dipping lead, when I squinted to see what fruit she was dipping….oh, JMJ, she was dipping the Baby Jesus….down and slowly up as she watched the yogurt drip off the little guy….I hugged her tightly and said I didn’t think the baby had ever been so clean….

"Down Cow" treatment at Mapleton Valley Farms.....
though its winter outside, Auburn is in a cow "hot tub"....she couldn't stand by herself due to
a metabolic imbalance due to having a baby...so after getting in the tub, we sealed the back and filled the
tank with 120 degree water....it buoyed her to a standing position where she stayed for about 12 hours,
before standing on her own.....in the tank she can enjoy hay and feed when she feels like it!
Like all dairy farmers I know, we treat our cows "mothers", with kindness and concern.....they provide our livelihood...

Cowboy Cavier

The vet calls me MFA during harvest.(mother farms alone)...morning milking and chores were fueled by 5 sticks of red licorice!  Almost a month of perfect harvest weather has its downfall....no "down" and recuperate day!....but, we shouldn't complain with harvesting winding down.
I wanted to share a recipe from my friend Jessica....she does the cooking for our crew at World Dairy Expo....EASY...NUTRITIOUS....not to mention "DARN GOOD" with or without chips.
Cowboy Caviar

1 can of White Sweet Corn (Shoepeg) Drained
1 can of Pinto Beans Drained
1 can of Black Beans
1 can of Black Eyed Peas Drained
1 Medium Onion Chopped
1 Green Pepper Chopped
1 Yellow Pepper Chopped
1 Red Pepper Chopped
4 Ribbed of Celery Chopped

Mix in bowl and set aside

1 cup Vegetable Oil
½ Cup of Sugar (I use Splenda)
½ Cup Cider Vinegar (I usually put in a touch more)

Simmer Liquids and Sugar until sugar is dissolved.

The batch for expo was a single of the dressing and double the veggies.

Light hearted notes from an old church musician

As a new blogger, I'm going to follow the suggestion to have "theme days".

I spent nearly 30 years singing and playing at weddings, funerals, anniversaries, etc.....
some stories will be funny, some sad, some bizarre!!!

As I heard the church bells this morning, I got to thinking about my Grandma G's funeral...
she was the first grandma to die for many of us cousins.....the funeral home had a small room where the organ and musicians performed....we had cousins with instruments and cousins that sang....it seemed like we were jammed in that room like sardines....as we somberly waited our turn, the funeral director came in, quite stoikely....stood there a few minutes....then in a flash!!!...whipped out this long list and asked, "anybody wanna buy some girl scout cookies?!!!"
